So You Want To Level Scholar? [Part 1]

I’ve had a few people come up to me telling me they’re practicing the ways of the Scholar, trying to keep up with the studies and the spells. Learning of the positive and negative effects to both of the Grimoires. Some would ask for my opinion on what to do, and others would ask for general advice.

All in all, this entry will try to convey the essence of what it is to be a Scholar.

Scholar is a very strategic job. You can get by, by just doing the same-old, same-old, but I’m not about to talk about that. I find those whom do that to be a disgrace to the title, Scholar. A Scholar is a tactical mage.  Keyword: Tactical.

While under the studies of a Scholar, you will learn about the different Grimoires  – The Light Grimoire (White Grimoire, Light Arts, White Arts, White Magic, etc) – and the Dark Grimoire (Black Grimoire, Dark Arts, Black Arts, Black Magic, etc).

Unlike other mages, you will learn how to focus your energy onto one of the Grimoire, more than the other. Doing so will result of benefits for said Grimoire, but when casting a spell opposing the Grimoire, you find yourself at penalties.  For example, under Light Arts you may cast White Magic quicker (10% quicker) and costing less of your mana (10% less) but if you attempt to cast any Black Magic, then it will cost you, not only more mana (20% more) but time as well (20% longer).

That’s pretty much the basic elements of a Scholar; being able to focus on a particular magic side. As you progress you will begin to learn more and more of the arts and be able to focus your energy stronger and quicker – these abilities are known as Stratagems.

There are five basic stratagems for each Grimoire. Each of the five essentially do the same but for a specific Grimoire. The five are…

(Light Arts/Dark Arts)
Penury/Parsimony:   -50% MP Cost
Celerity/Alacrity:  -50% Casting/Recasting Time
Accession/Manifestation:  Transform a Single Target spell into an Area of Effect
Rapture/Ebullience: Enhances the Potency of the spell
Addendum:White / Addendum:Black: Ability to Access restricted spells
