Dynamis Xarcabard
Merits: Stormsurge (5), Focalization (1), Elemental Magic Skill (8)
I decided to finally test out my scholar nuking in Dynamis last night.. Dynamis – Xarcabard to be precise. I’ve never really looked at the figures for mage damage until last night so I didn’t really know what to expect. I had just recently finally capped off Elemental Magic Skill and picked up some new gear including the Wizard’s Earring (+5 Elemental Magic when subjob is Black Mage). Overall with my trusty Ice Staff equipped (yes, Ice, not Aquillo, leave me alone >_>), I had 324 Elemental Magic Skill and with food and hailstorm I was able to maintain about 110 INT (give orĀ take).
Another Black Mage came and I was forced to leave the party. I took great offense to this to be honest. I’ve worked hard to get up to “attempt” to be on (a close) scale with the Black Mages, but I was shunned away so quickly and so easily dismissed. I began some conversation’s in private with a couple of them trying to figure out why I had been discarded so easily? Some responses I was given was that
“it was the norm [for `Black Mages` to be in the same party]”
“scholar’s are more self-sufficiant”
“it’s not like the bard could give you refresh anyways with sublimation”
“black mages are more vulnurable”
etc etc etc
My response to those (well, all but the first) was, “I am a Scholar/Black Mage. I do NOT have Stoneskin or Blink. I CAN stack sublimation with a Bard’s Refresh. While I may have Sublimation, I cannot rest while it is storing due to no Stoneskin.” I also went on to mention about my storms and Klimaform but those were just as easily dismissed.
At this point, I was fustrated on several levels. I decided to mark my status as “/away” to avoid any private messages and then I begin to see exactly how I stacked up against these black mages…
I made a chart!
| Name | Sum | Count | Average | Max | Min |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bro | 860 | 9 | 96 | 267 | 18 |
| Caydence | 11069 | 30 | 369 | 615 | 39 |
| Evrart | 11879 | 46 | 258 | 874 | 15 |
| Greshic | 7574 | 27 | 281 | 566 | 49 |
| Kintoki | 5895 | 26 | 227 | 596 | 28 |
| Maxemus | 11659 | 38 | 307 | 783 | 42 |
| Renebro | 12305 | 37 | 333 | 719 | 26 |
| Setherio | 15560 | 43 | 362 | 922 | 156 |
| Theodoricus | 15762 | 48 | 328 | 832 | 45 |
| Tobian | 785 | 21 | 37 | 186 | 9 |
| Usababe | 8993 | 35 | 257 | 556 | 26 |
The following is random data from my log file of the Dynamis. By random, I mean I picked out a select few, but tried to keep it even (ie: Not going to show me doing 990 and everyone else getting a 20). The basic strategy I ended up using was to keep Hailstorm on at all times and Klimaform as much as possible. Elemental Seal when able to.

gdi that is so annoying. When are we schs gonna stop getting pushed aside? I feel like a… like a…. pup!!!

I had Dynamis yesterday, too. Dynamis-Beaucedine, though.
I was picked up for the BLM pt on SCH/RDM with around 311/101+7+7 (give or take a few), but left on my own will once the 5th BLM spawned out of nowhere, because I felt (and still do) it’s better that way. Between Aspir, Sublimation and Parsimony spam (no Alacrity for Klimaform, because I felt somewhat cocky on about 311/115 with HQ staves), SCH does not need to /heal or rely on other forms of Refresh. Wizard’s Roll made me cry a bit, but I still think it’s the best the six nukers of us could get out of that situation.
So, while all other “reasons” you got for your /pcmd kick might be invalid, SCH indeed is more “self-sufficient”, even without Stoneskin. But I don’t think I’m telling you news here. I’d just suggest to perform and not be frustrated over that. Show them your results if you feel like it, but don’t make it your “proof” of you belonging to them. And get used to not be in the BLM pt once it’s 6/6. Might be sad to you, but it’s true.
I’m sorry.
Have a meeting now. Maybe I’ll throw in another wall of text after that.

The more or less part of the “frustration” was due to my long period of “expecting” to be part of that nuking group – I literally spent a week or two straight meriting for it. You know, saying, “hey, look what i can do.” Maybe I was expecting to much when I thought I’d be welcomed with open arms. I’ve come to terms now that I feel it’ll be futile to keep the same thought process.
I won’t deny for a minute that we are more self-efficient as well as self-reliant. I never denied that. Another part of the reason I wanted to be in the group was that I didn’t want to just nuke. I wanted to do what I feel I should do as a Scholar – help enhance the party. In this case it’s mages which mean usually Hailstorm. After that, klimaform. I wouldn’t of nuked as much in a party, but I’m still certain that the numbers of the whole would of improved a lot.
It’s sad to see your efforts were more or less in vain, at least in regards to your goals, dude. Maybe some of them have read commonly seen things like “SCH pwnz j00 BLM!” (which I think isn’t true in many cases; Dynamis being one of them, btw) and felt like putting up a protective coat of isolation. Yeah, that really is far-fetched, but not too far off, I think.
I almost always end up taking some secondary healer role and support (aka “Light Arts lolSCH”) in an alliance, giving around Firestorm and such to my pt, while keeping the whole alliance alive. Since I do a quite good job at that (and because those melees love that STR+7, for some reason), I think I’m of more use to the whole run in that role, even though my “real” heart would like to nuke the sh*t out of those stupid mobs. But with the inherent lack of people who want to keep other people alive in our LS (usually, our runs would have around WHMx2 and me for two whole alliances in cities and WHM+SCH in Northlands & Dreamland), that’s just not viable. I’d have to admit casting Armageddon V or going nuts with WS Doomsday probably *is* more fun than doing such pansy stuff like keeping others alive and well buffed as well as – to a lesser extent, because I actually love that – controlling the mobs. That at least would explain the incredible numbers of DD we always have…
Which leads me to the point why you might have ben booted out of the BLM pt. In the setting you were in, the relevant questions are: Is Accession Hailstorm + Manifestation Klimaform more useful to the pt’s damage output than a fifth BLM? And if it is, would the other four BLMs know that, or would they assume it’s their leet uberness that made them perform so well?
The first obviously depends on the BLM that is going to take your slot. Taking your chart into consideration, it seems a permanent INT+7 and a MACC+unknown on about 1/3 of all nukes – Manifestation + Alacrity + Klimaform would or should come up about every 3m, as to not run out of Stratagems; and people wouldn’t use Blizzard IV or Freeze II onry – would outperform every single nuker you have listed except for maybe the top three ones. Of course these are just assumptions, but again, I don’t think I’m too far off. An average bump of maybe 30~50 points of damage to the 4 BLMs seems possible, given your numbers on SCH. Then, add your own occassional nukes. Sounds like it’s close, at least.
But, that’s my guess, you won’t get much credit for all that. A 5th BLM will, no matter what, always be better. Because the grass on the other side is greener. You know that.
Says someone who has nuked for {insert single-digit number here} times in Dynamis, eventually being disposed the day people figured out Firestorm actually gives STR+7 to them and started drooling over that. Oh, and the BLM leader seems to hate any forms of Fast Cast, because he loves them timed nukes so much and never ever comes anything different than BLM/WHM. I guess my fate was decided before I even had entered the LS. >.>
I guess I’m gonna parse my next Dynamis run and figure out how much that STR+7 (and maybe En-spells) actually does. And then decide whether I’d have surpassed myself by nuking. Dynamis – San d’Oria sounds like a good place to do that. It’s kinda boring there, anyway, unless some lolAvatar goes Astral Flow…
~ SKudo, <3 walls of text!
well, I have to say, now you know why Im leveling whm, Im more or less being forced to for the same reason basicly. Ive been shunned as pup in endgame LS, even though my “nuking” dmg is on par if not greater than blms (based on a salvage boss fight with gimped INT). It is rather annoying isnt it? They seem very unwilling to bend and stay with convention. Its just sad that it seems that everyone wants to belive a stereotype and is unwilling to acknowledge that a person’s skill and knowledge of a job, as well as the time and effort invested in researching its capabilities and testing, can actually have an effect on what the job can do. I cant stand being a whm, but I guess as long as it gets me what I want for the job I love, Ill just grin a bear it.
I should point out that there was a PUP in said Dynamis. Me and the Puppetmaster were making jokes in tells between us at the beginning because during the first part of it, the damn Puppet kept out nuking me!
Now I know you’re a great PUP Mal and have learned not to (I guess I didn’t quite learn…) underestimate Puppetmasters, I don’t think I’ve been in a situation like that to see you(‘re Puppet) shine like that with black magic.
Now I know Puppetmaster’s will still not be the most welcomed, but I think most people are – as I was – ignorant to just how powerful and strong their puppets truly are. But at least I know this now ^^/
why thank you seth ;D just wish i’d stayed the whole time to see how it woulda turned out!
